Australian Political Cartoons Exhibition
The Australian Cartoonists Association (of which Dave Follett is a longstanding and multiple award winning member) together with Global Art Projects organised the exhibition 'A Day is a Long Time in... Australian Political Cartoons' in the luxurious Sofitel Melbourne On Collins, heralded as Australia's Hotel for the Arts.
Asked to submit a piece by GAP's Donald Williams, David chose his illustration 'The Fall of Murdoch', originally commissioned as a cover illustration for The WEEK Magazine in July 2011. Relating to the disastrous phone hacking scandal in Murdoch's now defunct British tabloid News of The World, 'The Fall of Murdoch' shows the famous statue of Sadam Hussein (in the likeness of Rupert Murdoch) being pulled down with chains from a NoTW podium. The message is clear: the media mogul's empire is crumbling, and the dictator's reign is in ruins. Tabloid journalism will (hopefully) never be the same again!
Opening night proved a terrific success, with the infamous Red Symons setting the scene as guest speaker, and many works sold. Among the esteemed artists represented on the walls are Bill Leak, Mark Knight, Anton Emdin, Matt Golding, David Pope, Eric Lobbecke, Geoff Hook and Ron Tandberg.
The exhibition runs until 8th October 2012 in the Lobby Gallery.
