Zombie Balt

Are you ready to put yourself to the ultimate test? Because it’s time to open that can of whoop ass you’ve been saving for a rainy day and take on a zombie army. You may be the only human left who can rid the planet of this mass infection.

That's right, we've made our first commercial game - Zombie Balt. It all started in March when Nathan Anderson from Envelop Entertainment approached us with his concept for a game he was presenting to the AppVillage.

The AppVillage is a ground-up gaming community established by Steve Fanale and Patrick Visser. In collaboration with the AppVillage, Watermark Creative invited illustrators to submit styles for potential selection. And the winner was... Pawel Zawislak.

Pawel and Nathan began by fleshing out a script and developing characters and environments. He's now been working on this 'nightmare' vision almost non stop for the last four months.

Working with AppVillage has the huge advantage of allowing developers to test games they are designing in realistic settings. “We were able to plug the rough assets directly into the AppVillage's custom-designed gaming software Mayhem to get an immediate feel for the game and how the protagonists interacted with each other and their environment,” says Pawel. “Mayhem allowed us to control size, pace and other parameters in the game, which was a great advantage.”

Once all Pawel's illustrations were ready, Tess Monash from Watermark’s animation team in Auckland took the characters and brought them to life.

With the art and animation finished, Steve and Patrick assembled all the pieces in Mayhem and made sure it all worked perfectly.

The game’s story is straightforward - one person’s fight to survive against all the odds. All that remains is for you to answer a simple question: are you the one?
