Have Sketchbook, Will Travel
It is something of an understatement to say that Joseph likes to sketch. But being too short of time to take two-hour life drawing classes, he hones his craft whenever he can. On ferries, buses and plane; even sitting in a cafe with friends. His sketchbook goes everywhere he does and has become something of a best friend.
He draws mostly people, observing them and getting quick, realist sketches or caricatures. But he occasionally draws objects and buildings, too. If there’s no time to draw his subject, a quick photo on his phone makes a good reference for later work.
So, if you notice a man in the corner of the cafe, sunglasses on, scribbling away in a book, it could be Joseph, and he could be drawing you.
“I have found drawing in a sketchbook is such a wonderful tool not only to record an idea, but also to constantly train your ability to observe what's happening in front of you and draw it as quickly as possible,” Joseph says.
“It helps me to improve my drawing skills, and I can do it no matter where I am. There's always something for me to draw and practice.”
As the grand masters say, the only way to get better is through repetition. Wax on wax off!
